Today it seems
that there is a lot of confusion over curses.
The devil has managed to convince many that curses don’t exist, and
still others say curses have no power since the blood of Jesus breaks all
curses, and still others stir up fear and are convinced that curses are the
cause of everything that is wrong in their lives. But what does God’s Word say about curses?
What is a Curse?
A curse is a prophetic word of ill will. A curse is the opposite
of a blessing.
Some things God has cursed....
Overlooking
poverty is a cursed thing...
Proverbs 28:27He that giveth unto the poor
shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
Robbing
God is a cursed thing....
Malachi 3:9Ye are cursed with a curse:
for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation.
God
cursed the ground after Adam sinned, and this is a curse that we still see
working today...
Genesis 3:17 And unto Adam he said, Because thou
hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which
I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for
thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
You
and I have the ability to curse or to bless....
James 3:10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth
blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of
the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Curses
can exist or have power only where there is authority...
Proverbs 26:2 As the bird by wandering, as the
swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
How is this authority given
????
We give authority when we sin....
Jacob feared that he would bring a
curse upon HIMSELF by deceiving his father....
Why didn’t he??? Because Rebekka took the curse herself. (of course Jacob was
already the child to receive the blessing... but Rebekka took matters into her
own hands here)
Genesis 27:12 My father peradventure will feel
me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me,
and not a blessing.
Curses can come by taking up
something that is cursed.....
Deuteronomy 7:26Neither
shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed
thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly
abhor it; for it is a cursed thing.
We can accept a curse
willingly....
When the God’s people returned to
Jerusalem after having been in Babylonian captivity, they placed themselves
under a curse, by agreeing to keep the commandments....(there is a curse that
comes with the law....Jesus broke the curse of law.)
You can read all the curses of the law, in Deuteronomy 27
Nehemiah 10:29 They clave to their brethren, their
nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God’s
law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the
commandments of the LORD our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;
Those who reject Jesus and live
under the law, willingly accept the curse of the law
Galatians 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Through
Christ we can break the effects of curses, by speaking blessings.....
We are given the power by God
through Christ to bind and loose on earth, what we will and it will be done in
heaven...
Matthew 18:18Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever
ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose
on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
You will remember that back in
the Garden, God cursed the earth. The earth is still under a curse, even
though we who are saved are not under the curse of the law...the curse on the
earth will eventually lead to the earth passing away, and a new earth will
be created...
Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new
earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was
no more sea.
But, because we through Christ
have the ability to bind and loose... we can speak blessing over our little
plot of land and bring blessing upon it. We cannot undo the curse that God has
placed upon the whole earth.
Proverbs 11:11 By the blessing of the upright the
city is exalted: but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked.
We can bring blessing where
there is injury and sickness...
Proverbs 12:18 There is that speaketh like the
piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.
Curses can have effect on the
whole household.....
Proverbs 3:33The curse of the LORD is in
the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
Curses can last
generations.....
Genesis 12:3And I will bless them that
bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of
the earth be blessed.
The disciples cursed anyone
who would preach another gospel....
Galatians 1:8But though we, or an angel
from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached
unto you, let him be accursed.
What we do with our mouth is so
important. Do you use it for life or death? Our words are not to be taken
lightly. There is power in the spoken word, power to speak blessings or
cursings... against your children, your grandchildren, your health.
We are held accountable for
every idle word:
Matthew 12:36But I say unto you, That every
idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of
judgment.
So, we see that curses are real; and we have the power to bless and to curse; Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, but that doesn’t mean that other curses cannot come. The disciples themselves cursed anyone who would preach another gospel! The power of life and death are still in the tongue.
Are you using your mouth to bring blessing or cursing?
